What Is SPC Stone Plastic Click-Lock Flooring?

SPC is an abbreviation, with its full names being Stone Plastic Composite or Stone Polymer Composite. In Chinese, it is commonly referred to as “石塑复合材料” (shí sù fù hé cái liào), which literally translates to “stone-plastic composite material”.
This type of flooring material is mainly made by mixing stone powder (calcium carbonate) and polymers (plastic or polyvinyl chloride, PVC), followed by high-temperature extrusion to form the final product.

1. SPC Material Properties

2. SPC buckle principle

Click-lock flooring is a type of flooring that connects using a special interlocking buckle structure, requiring no glue or nails for fixation. Basically, it adopts either a tongue-and-groove structure or a click system design. The edge of each flooring plank is crafted into a protruding male buckle (the raised part) and a recessed female buckle (the grooved part). During installation, insert the male buckle of one plank into the female buckle of another, then gently press or tilt to lock them in place, achieving a secure connection.

Its advantages include easy installation, simple disassembly, strong environmental adaptability, and an attractive appearance—making it highly suitable for modern homes and commercial spaces. Especially for locations that demand quick construction and flexible assembly/disassembly, such as rental properties or exhibition venues, click-lock flooring is an ideal choice.

3. The Structure of SPC Flooring

The structure of SPC flooring mainly consists of four layers, each with a distinct function:

  • Wear-Resistant Layer: The surface is coated with a transparent wear-resistant coating, which enhances scratch resistance.
  • Decorative Print Layer: Provides various textures and patterns such as wood-like and stone-like designs.
  • SPC Core Layer: Based on stone powder and PVC, it endows the flooring with excellent stability and hardness.
  • Bottom Layer (Optional EVA or IXPE Foam): Improves comfort and reduces noise.

As recommended by QianMuBang  & Construction, first of all, the wear-resistant layer should be selected with a rotation count of over 50,000 or meet the European standard AC3 and above. For the decorative print layer, you can choose the one you like. As for the bottom layer, if IXPE foam is used, it will deliver the best performance.

4. Service Life of SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) Flooring

The service life of SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) flooring is generally 15 to 25 years, or even longer. It depends on a variety of factors, such as the quality of the flooring material, the usage environment, maintenance conditions, and installation details. In commercial areas with high foot traffic, the flooring can also last for a long time as long as the wear-resistant layer is thick enough. Additionally, the service life of the flooring can be extended through some manual measures, for example:

  • Using carpets or mats: Place floor mats at entrances and exits to reduce the amount of sand and gravel brought into the room.
  • Protecting furniture with foot pads: Install soft pads under the bottom of furniture to prevent scratches on the flooring when moving the furniture.
  • Avoiding strong acid or strong alkali detergents: Use neutral detergents or special-purpose floor detergents to prevent corrosion of the flooring surface.
  • Maintaining appropriate indoor humidity: Even though SPC flooring is moisture-proof, regular dehumidification can reduce the depreciation of the flooring.

SPC stone plastic interlocking flooring price

When it comes to the price of SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) click-lock flooring, you get what you pay for. Basically, the higher the thickness of the wear-resistant layer and the greater the overall thickness of the flooring, the higher the price will be.

1. SPC stone plastic flooring thickness

The hot-selling SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) flooring products come in five thicknesses:

4mm,4.5mm,5mm,5.5mm,6mm,7mm,8mm.

QianMuBang strongly does not recommend using 5.5mm-thick flooring. Because when the flooring is too thin, the click-lock joints are prone to cracking. Moreover, under conditions of direct sunlight exposure or water accumulation, the flooring is more likely to warp or suffer other forms of damage.

8.5mm and 9.5mm-thick flooring are usually the best choices. However, if your budget is limited, you can consider 6.5mm and 7.5mm-thick options—these are also the best-selling types currently available. For reference, please see the flooring price comparison table below (we base this on high wear-resistant rotation counts and aluminum trioxide coatings).

Advantage

Detailed Explanation

Cool to the Touch

Due to its stone-plastic structure, the surface of SPC flooring feels relatively cool to the touch. Compared with solid wood flooring, it lacks a certain natural warmth.

Limitations in Pattern Texture

Although there is a wide variety of patterns and colors available, it is difficult for SPC flooring to fully replicate the delicate texture of solid wood and natural stone in terms of tactile feel.

Relatively Heavy Weight

With a high content of stone powder, SPC flooring is slightly heavier than traditional plastic flooring. Careful handling is required during transportation and installation.

High Hardness, Low Flexibility

Its high hardness may cause foot fatigue after prolonged standing. In some household environments, it is necessary to match it with soft decorations such as carpets.

Flat Ground Required Before Installation

Although SPC flooring has low requirements for the base ground, the ground must be flat. Otherwise, problems such as warping or noise may easily occur after installation.

Potential Deformation Under High Temperatures

Prolonged exposure to high-temperature environments may lead to slight deformation of SPC flooring. Attention should be paid to rooms that receive direct sunlight in the afternoon without sunshade measures.

Difficulty in Refinishing

Unlike solid wood flooring, SPC flooring cannot be refinished or sanded. When the surface is worn, only partial replacement can be done.

1. SPC snap-on flooring disaster

Based on years of experience at QianMuBang, issues with click-lock flooring primarily fall into two categories.

The first category is problems related to materials and installation. If overly thin materials are used, the flooring may crack or deform even with slight unevenness of the base or external force. Additionally, the quality of installation is crucial. Some new flooring installers may fail to fasten the click-lock joints tightly, leading to floor warping later; or they may strike too hard during installation, damaging the tenons and causing poor fit (which is not visible right after installation); or they may leave insufficient or excessive expansion gaps—all of which can lead to problems during subsequent use.

The second category is improper use. For overly thin stone-plastic flooring, frequent exposure to standing water or direct sunlight can easily cause the material itself to deteriorate, resulting in expansion or warping. Due to the difficulty of partial repairs, it is often necessary to spend extra money to redo the entire floor.

2. Plasticizers in SPC Click-Lock Flooring

SPC stone-plastic flooring usually contains no plasticizers. Plasticizers are mainly used to enhance the flexibility of materials; however, SPC stone-plastic flooring emphasizes high hardness and stability, so it does not require plasticizers to achieve a flexible effect. Taiwan has strict regulations on plasticizers (such as phthalates) in PVC materials. Therefore, as long as you choose regular, tested products, there will be no issues.

3. SPC Click-Lock Flooring Used as Wall Panels

Occasionally, customers ask me if SPC flooring can be installed on walls. The answer is absolutely yes, and the installation method is almost the same as when it is installed on floors. However, this practice is relatively uncommon. For wall surfaces, most people still choose options such as paint, wallpaper, and decorative materials, mainly because these alternatives are relatively more affordable.

4. Disposal of SPC Click-Lock Flooring

How should the waste related to SPC flooring be disposed of? If the amount of waste is large, a waste collection truck is usually hired to haul it away at once. Some customers prefer DIY installation, which generates a small amount of flooring waste—this can be thrown into regular garbage. Additionally, SPC flooring is easy to break by hand; if the pieces are too large, you can break them into smaller sections to reduce their volume and length before packing them in garbage bags.

5. SPC Regulatory Compliance
